Nothing embodies the non-stop eating culture in Taipei like the city''s plethora of street stalls selling all manner of snacks, known locally as "xiaochi" or literally the "little eat." While most restaurants in town have set service hours for lunch and dinner, these smaller stalls are pretty much open as long as the proprietor has customers to serve.
The best way to sample the extensive selection of snack foods in Taipei in the shortest amount of time is to head for a night market, and there are plenty to choose from: those in the Shilin, Shida, Raohe, Gongguan, Tonghua, and Huasi Street (Snake Alley) areas being among the bigger and better known.
For sheer scale and selection, Shilin Night Market is one of the most popular night markets for visitors to Taiwan. A maze of stalls here sells everything from squid soup to oyster omelets, beef noodle soup to stinky tofu—the latter an experience you are sure to remember if you work up the nerve to try it. Though a lot of the food is deep-fried, there are also shops selling fresh fruit, juice and other less artery-taxing treats. The market is just a stone''s throw from the MRT Shilin Station, making it one of the more convenient night markets to reach. But the other market also offer a distinctive and visit-worthy experience.
If you are still craving a late night bite in the wee hours of the morning, there are several 24-hour restaurants in Taipei specializing in congee (rice porridge) and traditional Taiwanese breakfasts—oven-fired biscuits, fresh made soymilk, crepe-style omelets, and steamed veggie and meat buns. These places really get going in the after-club hours, and are perfect spots for night owls to refuel after a long night of dancing, karaoke singing, and whatever other late night fun keeps you up.
